A: EM speeds the peer review process by streamlining the journal office and peer review workflow. Specifically EM does this by providing the following functionality:

• As soon as an Editor chooses appropriate Reviewers for a submission, an e-mail request goes out to Reviewers.


• The "Suggest Reviewer" feature matches Reviewer expertise with manuscript keywords. It sorts Reviewers by availability, current workload, and other data that might affect Reviewer speed. This feature provides the Editor with a list of the most qualified and readily available Reviewers.
  
• If the Reviewer agrees to review, they gain immediate access to the PDF of the manuscript online. No waiting for the paper to arrive by mail or courier.
  
• Reviewers with overdue assignments receive automatic e-mail reminders. Mailing can be selective to respect and reflect special relationships with individual Reviewers.
  
• Reviewer comments are available online and can be immediately accessed by the Editor. Because the Editor is notified by e-mail that a review is complete, the journal staff does not play the "middle-man", and thus one more step is removed from the process.

• Remote Editors do not have to wait for manuscripts to arrive by mail before assigning Reviewers.


• The MEDLINE feature allows access to related literature quickly and conveniently. This provides a quick and easy mechanism for Editors to research similar article and ensures that submissions are new and novel.


• Because decisions are made online and sent to Authors by e-mail, notifications are instantaneous.


• Source files, for the production team, are available online and can be downloaded by the production editors, bypassing mail or courier.
